any discussion Jeep ends inevitably mutually agreeable subject for all concerned :.

"Jeep really needs to make a pick-up already."

the idea that stuffed shirt in Auburn Hills, earning more in one day than we do in one year, somehow missed the point is entirely possible (remember the -mounted exhaust center in the great Cherokee SRT8, effectively prohibiting any kind of towing), but very unlikely

actually:. Jeep now has a pickup. Its called the Rebel Ram

mandatory disclosure :. I skin in the game of pick-up. No. My father just had one of the following: A white Ford F-150, a black Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram Green (when they were called as such). They were all again when he bought them, 190s-era vintage and equally pampered. No, we are not a rich family, and no, I still could not back up a trailer with a gun pointed at my head

To be even more clear :. The only pickup I remember fondly is a dirty 1996 Toyota Pickup (pre-Tacoma y ears) that my brother took in college. He was five-speed and six-cylinder; loose and indestructible. He could not run on a hill and run the A / C at the same time, but he felt that it could work to anything.

just in the inner pickup war for domination, Im Switzerland.

now that you know where my loyalties fall, we will go to important things.

Powertrain
The nuance and variation pickup powertrain and configuration options is dizzying, and in some places, probably an accredited college courses for matriculating majors. I will do my best.

Our Ram Rebel came equipped with the optional 5.7-liter Hemi V-8. The mill of 395 horses all Ford bests option (for now), but below 6.2-liter V-8 offered by GM 25 ponies -. If the history of the band is the kind of thing matters to you

2015_Ram_Rebel_(16_of_18) Ram 5.7-liter V-8 is getting a little long in the tooth and is not my favorite all around application in the Ram 1500 anyway - the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 takes that crown. But in the Rebel Ram, the V-8 is saved by the ZF 8-speed slushbox intelligently prudent and intelligent. The mill retains eager Rebel defeat on highway driving, keeping low and high mileage plan. Off road, the 8-speed decently keeping according yaw gears and the steering angle, and I rarely used the driving gear selection buttons mounted to set the selection of the ZF equipment. (The transmission Achilles heel highway passing, mash the pedal to the right between 55 mph and 80 mph and wait a second before the turns and speed react accordingly Eh ..)

the engine is torquey and decisive moderately sensitive, but certainly not nervous. On some climbs, I adjusted the throttle position ever so slightly forward to encourage the powerful motor to mount, but I would not say either deficient or late. After all, I expect a truck engine 13, is about as useful as Spry and three bad knees.

(Strangely, I would have imagined Ram have released their 6.4-liter Hemi V8 for the Rebel Ford Raptor-esque. Maybe it gets a little too close for comfort with the Power Wagon?)

in the back, the power is transmitted by a standard 3.92 rear axle or 3.21 rear axle option, both available with an anti-spin rear differential if you are so inclined to add it to your 4 × 4. Our tester was equipped with the old, optioned with traction control, and could climb and sprint like a champion. (Predictably, our mileage with the highest ratio w as not great.)

rated towing capacity is Our Rebel 9,0 pounds and payload capacity is 1211 according the manufacturer. We decided to find the nearest mountain to climb instead.

Choose your own adventure!

Do you think that new Ram design language is great? ( Skip to Paragraph 1)

Do you think the new leadership of Ram is not that great? (Skip to Paragraph 2)

Paragraph 1: head to toe, the Rebel Ram is the most polarizing truck on the market. . Undeniable

Paragraph 2: If front end of the Rebel has evolved into a snout, and the rear end is certainly a donkey 2015_Ram_Rebel_(7_of_18)

When the Rebel Ram unveiled earlier. this year, it was clear that the truckmaker could not
quickly exceed his days Dodge. The rear end, which sports brand "Ram" visible from space, does not pass the breakfast test for me. The front end has a Ram logo that is large enough to be an intention and not a brand (eg "Im going with my RAM RAM truck now"!) Is saved by the amount of black plastic hiding his clean lines. If you spent two braggarts ends and Ram made a case as a sensible alternative to the Art Deco movement of Ford and the movement of the dough GM wallpaper.

(hood nostrils mounted are more my speed, and I wish Ram had left there.)

Between the fangs of the head and tail, er, pipes, is at the heart of Ram. Fortunately, the tires chunky 285 / 70R17 Toyo Open Country a / T are not hidden by black well of the Ram; basal wheels pull rubbers in wells There is a little more coating than Id like, but it gives the Rebel sense of. purpose and dare drivers :. Use me

I rea lly do like General Ram style; I just wish it was more subtle than their current approach -. Who is underestimated as a ring of five fingers

Interior
You might find more comfortable chairs than those found in the Ram (or any other car FCA full size for that matter), but they would pro bably have the word "la-Z-Boy" written on them somewhere. the padded, oversized thrones are deeply comfortable and Im very suspicious that they will last more . long as a few years

2015_Ram_Rebel_(10_of_18) the black interior red high contrast is a visual cue to the unique position of the Rebel within the range of Ram - just in case you missed giant "Rebel" emblazoned on the glove compartment and the dashboard. There were little touches everywhere, like the Ram embroidered on the sides of the drivers seat and the passenger, and the tread pattern embossed on the seat backs, but overall, the Rebel Ram is a beautiful place to be -. Even on rocky roads

The control and selection button equipment all have a feeling of being usable and accessible, even with work gloves on, and I can appreciate the tactile sensation. Ram GM may have to catch up in terms of ergonomics and accessibility, but were talking about a design 7 years compared to a design 2 years -. There will be differences between generations

Want referrals? I have a few. single dashboard of the Rebel is not very easy to read, and the current 12-volt outlet is buried in the small open storage.

But I love the seized phone holders, which are placed into the small opening of storage under infotainment. It is a solution of 30 cen ts to a million dollar problem. Engineering at its best.

2015_Ram_Rebel_(13_of_18) Infotainment
Uconnect 8.4-inch screen of Ram (yeah, that Uconnect) was stuffed into the dashboard of our tester and performed adequately. Fo r my money, General Motors was always the least difficult, easier to understand the system (yes Mark, I know), but Uconnect Ram is not bad.

It could use a little more pixels and better Bluetooth interface, but I do the bed Uconnect blow

I am also a petition for better integration of cluster navigation on board, but I guess thats already on the horizon.

player
Unexpectedly, the Rebel Ram was stiffer than I expected. His manners were sorted interstate, but the Bilstein shocks do not do favors there. The road trip is pitch pine (but not as painful as Power Wagon) and Rebel for extra-road activity

Off road -. While certainly not the most technical courses in the world - the rebel shines. The extra inch of ground clearance rebel gains on the Ram helps to increase its angle of approach by some 2.5 degrees (22.9 vs 25.3), and it can go up moderately steep slopes. (I say we shimmied up a 30 degree slope without scratching anythin g.)

2015_Ram_Rebel_(4_of_18) The Rebel is equipped with an adjustable air suspension that increases or decreases the truck four inches from top to bottom. We spent more time in Aero Mode - which is lower than normal and Off Road heights but above Entrance height / Output - because "aerodynamic truck" feels like an oxymoron. Its just who I am, people.

Around the rough stuff, the Rebel is communicative and expressive. It is the stamp and the ball was of the uncertainty of his foot under the bed, but remained relatively calm inside. On motorways, the drone chunky tires. On the track, the grip and chunky tires plant. It is a wonderful toy.

Which is why, after days behind the wheel, I realized what Ram truck did with the Rebel. It is not a logical competitor Raptor. In fact it is not even close.

In fact, the Rebel feels like the next step when a Wrangler Rubicon is just not big enough. And despite the massive Ram badge on the back, I know exactly what the Rebel: Its a Jeep
